The world has come to know Daniel Pearl as the Wall Street Journal reporter who was kidnapped and murdered by terrorists in Pakistan in early 2002, just four months after 9/11. Since then, he has been remembered as a symbol of hope: a man who built bridges between diverse cultures—as a writer and a gifted musician.

Colorado’s own Kailin Yong is the 2004/2005 recipient of the Daniel Pearl Memorial Violin. Kailin will have the instrument for one year and plans to use it for all of his musical endeavors, including special concert, part of an international network of concerts in Daniel’s name (Daniel World Music Days), using the power of music to reaffirm our commitment to tolerance, humanity and international friendship.

From his native Singapore, Kailin traveled to study at the Vienna Academy of Music, then came to the United States in 1999 to help found the Aerith String Quartet. Performing extensively in the U.S. and Asia, Kailin eventually settled in Denver, Colo., and now plays with the Kailin Yong Peace Project, Boulder Acoustic Society, Beco do Choro and many other musical acts.

Since his being named recipient of the Daniel Pearl memorial violin at the Mark O’Connor Strings Conference in 2004, Kailin’s career has taken the path of musical ambassadorship. In his musical travels, he has played everywhere from the streets of San Francisco to the hallowed symphony halls of Europe, bringing his music to both tiny cafés and youth symphonies. Most recently, his composition with the Boulder Acoustic Society titled “Does It Really Matter?” won the Independent Music Award for Americana Song of the Year. Kailin will release his new solo album, Bowing with the Flow, in summer 2008, sharing his musical journey over the past decade…and hints of the future.

Musical guest artists for the evening will include Middle Eastern master percussionist Souhail Kaspar, musical missionary and speaker Cameron Powers, composer and multi-instrumentalist Jesse Manno, and world music and jazz clarinet/sax player Dexter Payne.
