Growing up in the South during the 1980s and 1990s, folk singer/songwriter Sean Smith found his unique style in the hardships he faced as a black American. The Chattanooga, Tenn. native has found inspiration in the environment where he was raised, and his country/blues style is rooted in his deep connection to the social injustices he so adamantly hopes to change. He has performed 150 to 200 nights a year all over the country and has shared the stage with some of the best, including Janis Ian, Leo Kottke and John Mayer
In 2007, he showcased at NACA Northern Plains Conference in Minneapolis, Minn., and NACA Mid Atlantic Conference in Lancaster, Pa. In 2008, he showcased at the International Folk Alliance Conference. Sean has recorded two albums, Painted Souls and Live @ Eddie’s Attic. He plans to release his long-awaited third album in 2008 and a fourth in 2009.
David Berkeley will be joining Smith for this show. "Berkeley sings in a lustrous, melancholy voice with shades of Tim Buckley and Nick Drake" says The New York Times. Recently transplanted back to Atlanta from the tiny mountain village of Tralonca, Corsica, he first sang publicly at age 4 in the company of a traveling saleswoman. They went door to door, and he sang to help her sales.
There is a profound depth in David Berkeley's songs, a refreshing honesty, and his delivery is unaffected. Berkeley was featured in October on the NPR national radio series Ira Glass' "This American Life," on which he plays songs and tells a hilarious story of a most awkward private performance. He maintains a near-constant touring schedule, performing all over the US, UK and France. He has shared bills with Dido, Billy Bragg, Don McLean, toured with Nickel Creek, Ben Folds, Rufus Wainwright, Ray Lamontagne, Howie Day, Rhett Miller, Rachael Yamagata, Gary Jules, Vienna Teng, Joseph Arthur, Hem, Mason Jennings and Ben Lee.
