Planina performs haunting and beautiful songs from Eastern Europe, including music from Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Georgia, Hungary, Macedonia, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Turkey, and Ukraine, and the Sephardic and Rom (Gypsy) traditions from some of those areas. The word Planina means "mountain" in several south Slavic languages.
Since the inexperienced but intrepid Planina Balkan Women's Choir first performed in 1988, some 50 members have come through Planina's doors--some for short periods and some for many years. The group became a mixed chorus in 1999, has released 2 CDs and a cookbook of mostly Eastern European dishes, has studied with some stellar vocalists and instrumentalists from Eastern Europe, made two group trips to Bulgaria, and has collaborated with many local artists.
For this special anniversary concert, Planina welcomes back several former members to raise their voices with us in celebration of this thrilling music. Don't miss it!
