Karla Bonoff’s legacy as a performer and songwriter is summed up by Billboard magazine: “Long before Alanis and Jewel, there was a breed of singer/songwriters whose earthly anthems of soul-searching, heartache and joy touched souls in a way few can muster today.” Quoted from a review given for her All My Life: The Best of Karla Bonoff compilation CD, she has been one of the most successful songwriters of her generation, writing hit songs for everyone from Linda Ronstadt to Bonnie Raitt and Wynona Judd.

Born and raised in Southern California, Bonoff began writing songs at age 15. She reminisces about lining up to get in for the Monday night Troubadour Hoot, a breaking ground for many artists who went on to great success. She says, “It was an amazing time. Jackson Browne, James Taylor and Elton John were around the Troubadour in those days.” Through those hoots she found friends who became her fellow Bryndle members: Kenny Edwards (who had started the Stone Poneys with Linda Ronstadt and Bobby Kimmel), Wendy Waldman and Andrew Gold. They were a band ahead of their time.

From there, Bonoff went on to sing backup for Linda Ronstadt as well as record her own solo projects. Her work has not only been recorded by myriad artists—it has also been featured in several films, such as “About Last Night” (with co-writer J.D. Souther), “Footloose,” and “8 Seconds.” In 2007, Karla Bonoff – Live, a double-disk live recording, was released. “I think many of these songs have improved with age and I have never really documented what we do,” she says. Bonoff recorded all but one song of it at a small club in Santa Barbara with her long-time touring band, Kenny Edwards and Nina Gerber, plus Scott Babcock on percussion.

Telluride Bluegrass Competition finalist Megan Burtt will open the show.
