A protege of Stephane Grappelli, in the lineage of Bill Monroe, and an original member of David Grisman's Quintet, Darol Anger is now one of the world's pre-eminent fiddlers. His style and rhythmic innovations have changed fiddling all over the globe. Darol's main creative focus, Republic of Strings, has played festivals across the U.S., including RockyGrass, Grand Targhee, Grey Fox, and others. They have released two albums, performed live on 2 national radio broadcasts, and appeared twice on nationally-syndicated Mountain Stage in 2004-05.
Somewhere beyond or behind all musical borders lies a creative terrain where bluegrass, jazz, classical, pop, and various world music mingles, played by musicians who care more for inspiration than they do for genre. If that place has a name, it's surely the Republic of Strings, for no one knows its contours better than veteran Darol Anger and a constantly developing population of young excellent string players, including Mike Block, Scott Law, Lauren Rioux, & Sharon Gilchrist. They have created the visionary musical landscape of the Republic, exemplified by their 2 recordings, Republic Of Strings and Generation Nation, for Compass Records, and yet-to-be-titled 2010 release.
"cutting edge string quartet ...wildly virtuosic. By the end any remaining perceptions regarding the narrow range of string instruments were long gone. Anger’s group, more than a mere Republic, had the sound of a musical United Nations."-LOS ANGELES TIMES
