Once there was a grown man who lived in a closet...
Well, it wasn’t a real closet. He only used the closet as a secret entrance to his underground lair of tunnels where he was able to pursue his interests in math and science with no interruption from the outside world.
And he wasn’t a real man, only a character in the 80’s teen movie “Real Genius.”
What is real is that more than 20 years after the film was released, a band in Denver would name itself after this memorable character; and his name was Lazlo… Lazlo Hollyfeld.
Today, Lazlo’s Denver descendants (calling themselves The Hollyfelds) are steady at work making a name for themselves as one of the city’s hottest up-and-coming acts. The Hollyfelds present a stew music that combines classic country with rock, pop, folk and a touch of bluegrass to give off a sound that Westword says, “splits the difference between alt-country and the genre's mainstream,” and contains “just enough of the whiskey and heartache that makes great country music.”
Also featured tonight:
Gregory Greer. Being compared to the likes of James Taylor, Lyle Lovett, John Mellencamp and Marc Cohn, Greg's ability to prolifically compose is simply undeniable.
The Albuquerque, NM, based band named after the worst train wreck in history, The Porter Draw (all good bands have a ‘the’), sounds arguably better than the name’s origin. Their aggressive blend of Americana and Country makes use of traditional vocal harmony and the songwriting talents of three of the band’s members. Their talents have, in performance, complemented well bands such as Cross Canadian Rag Weed and The Reverend Horton Heat.
